Art Show To Feature Book-Signing, Birds of Prey

Hundreds of pieces of student artwork included in a recently published book will be on display during an art show and book-signing event hosted by the York County Conservation District in early August.

The Student Art Show and Book Signing will be held on Saturday, August 4 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. during Shank’s Mare’s Annual Outdoor Fest. Shank’s Mare is a retail, rental and outdoor instruction facility located at 2092 Long Level Road in Wrightsville.

The event will showcase students’ photographs and artwork, feature close encounters with live birds of prey (in the afternoon) and give visitors the opportunity to purchase signed copies of the PA Wildlife Journal, a 300-page reference book. It depicts native Pennsylvania birds and mammals.

The student artwork on display is all included in the book, which was written by the York County Conservation District’s Kim Young. The book is designed for multiple-grade-level audiences and features an easy-to-read format with icon boxes at the start of each chapter to quickly identify species characteristics. Much of the book’s charm and appeal is the hundreds of art pieces and photographs collected from students across the state.

“This book is different than other wildlife reference books out there,” Young said. “While many wildlife books are created for students, this book was created with students.”

All proceeds from book sales benefit the educational programs of the York County Conservation District. More than 500 copies have already been sold.

The event also will include original egg tempera paintings, limited-edition prints and gift cards by principal book artist, Millicent Neill Decker.
