Registration Opens For York County Senior Games

More than 600 seniors from across York County are expected to converge in late June for the 11th annual York County Senior Games.

The York County Senior Games began in 2002 as a one-day program featuring approximately 20 events. It now extends for six days and offers participants the chance to test their skills in 48 events.

The goal is to promote healthy lifestyles and fitness for York County men and women aged 50 and older. Registration is now open for this year’s games, which will take place from June 18 through 23. Events will include the second year of the triathlon, as well as perennial favorites such as bowling, bocce, mini golf, horseshoes, shuffleboard, throws, basketball hot shots, poker, and Wii bowling.

“We are looking forward to the week of Senior Games,” said York County Area Agency on Aging Director Dianna Benaknin. “It is a very rewarding week of activities promoting healthy living, exercise, as well as fellowship. We invite all York County residents age 50 and older to come out and join us this year.”

There is a $6 registration fee for an unlimited number of events if registration is completed by May 31. Fee for all registrations postmarked after May 31 is $8.

Registrations should be received as early as possible because of limited openings in some events. The registration fee is non-refundable. There are additional fees, payable at the event site, for some events.

Volunteers are also sought to help support the games. It’s a particularly great opportunity for adult civic organizations, church groups or businesses. To learn more about volunteer opportunities call Melissa at (717) 852-4964 or email

The Senior Games are organized by the York County Area Agency on Aging (YCAAA) in conjunction with the Senior Games Planning Committee, which is made up of community and business volunteers. Expenses for the Games are entirely underwritten by corporate sponsors, private donations and participant entry fees.

Any York County resident 50 years of age or older as of December 31, 2012, may participate. Age groups are 50-54, 55-59, 60-64, 65-69, 70-74, 75-79, 80-84, 85-89, and 90+

Event coordinators reserve the right to consolidate age divisions for competition based on insufficient entries, modify rules and formats or to cancel events. Medals will be awarded within each age group. Some events are open to men and women separately.

Registration booklets are available at many locations throughout the county or can be obtained by contacting the York County Area Agency on Aging at (717) 771-9001 or 1 (800) 632-9073. Registration forms are also available at on the ‘Forms and Documents’ page.

The Opening Ceremony and Closing Celebration for the Games will be free and open to the public. The Opening Ceremony has moved to the first day of events and will be held Monday, June 18 at Central York High School Athletic Stadium, 601 Mundis Mill Road in Springettsbury Township. All participants and their families are encouraged to attend the ceremony, which will feature the Parade of Athletes and Banners, Lighting of the Torch and door prizes.

The Closing Celebration will be held at 3:30 p.m. on Saturday, June 23 at the Central York High School Cafeteria. This event will celebrate the week of activities, recognize medal winners (including the triathlon and banner contest winners) and be a special time of sharing.

Participants and their families are invited to some ice cream and music. Picture memories will be shared during this special celebration.
