York County hires 911 director

The York County Commissioners have hired Matthew Hobson to be the county’s 911 director. His first day will be Feb. 10.

Mr. Hobson comes to York County 911 with broad experience in the public safety and emergency response community. He most recently worked as executive director of New River Valley Emergency Communications Regional Authority in Christiansburg, Virginia. There, he managed a newly consolidated emergency communications center.


Prior to his position in Virginia, Mr. Hobson had a six-year tenure with East Baton Rouge Parish in Louisiana, where he was the manager of the parish’s communications district that handled police, fire and EMS calls serving a population similar to York County’s and handling more than 320,000 emergency calls per year.

Mr. Hobson’s strong and lengthy experience distinguished him as a candidate for the position. His candidacy surfaced as part of a search committee that included York County 911 employees as well as representatives from the local police, fire and EMS communities.

“It was my pleasure to represent the York County law enforcement agencies as their representative on the 911 director search committee,” said Penn Township Police Chief Guy Hettinger. “Throughout this process, Mr. Hobson demonstrated a great deal of knowledge and experience with emergency center operations and personnel development. I am very pleased to welcome Mr. Hobson to York County and I look forward to working with him in his new position.”

Mr. Hobson intends to improve operations at York County 911, recognizing that there is a broad range of needs for the county’s emergency response agencies. He plans to first work with 911 staff and responders to build relationships.

“It is an honor and a privilege to have been chosen by the York County Commissioners for such an integral role in the public safety community,” Mr. Hobson said. “My intention is to lead the department into the future and work with the first responder agencies to provide the best possible responses to the community’s emergencies.”

Mr. Hobson has experience enhancing performance through the deployment of technology, including a computer-aided dispatch replacement among other robust system upgrades that affected multiple agencies. He has overseen the introduction of emergency medical dispatch into 911 centers that have never had it before. The coordination necessary to oversee such projects will serve as a vital skill as York County 911 transitions to next generation technology.

As part of their effort to enhance the relationship between York County 911 and the county’s emergency responders, the commissioners have revamped the York County Public Safety Advisory Board as a multidisciplinary body to provide insights and information regarding 911.

“The collaboration among customers, community stakeholders and county officials was a vital component of this hiring process,” said York County President Commissioner Julie Wheeler. “We will continue working in a collaborative manner to meet the needs of all York Countians.”
