Celebrate Butterflies and Moths During Butterfly Weekend

Celebrate butterflies and moths through interactive exhibits and activities during Butterfly Weekend at Nixon County Park on August 13 and August 14.

The weekend, presented by the York County Department of Parks and Recreation, will feature a variety of special events and programming about these incredible creatures. Hours are 9 a.m. through 4 p.m. on Saturday and 12 p.m. through 4 p.m. on Sunday. All ages are welcome.butterfly 17057 1280

Butterfly Walk: 9:30 a.m. – 11 a.m. on Saturday, Aug. 13: Join a Park naturalist for a hike up the hill to the goldenrod field to identify butterflies, learn about their host plants and their habits. Also learn the life cycle of a butterfly. The hike is free and registration is not required.

Live Caterpillars: 11 a.m. – 1 p.m. on Saturday, Aug. 13. Master gardener and butterfly educator Deb Carman will show participants live caterpillars, talk about their host plants and their habits. Bring your photograph of a butterfly or caterpillar for identification. Drop in any time during the program period to have your questions answered. The program is free and registration is not required.

Butterflies and moths - Pollinators: 2 p.m. – 3 p.m. on Saturday, Aug. 13: Master gardener and butterfly educator Deb Carman will discuss the importance of how these insects fit into the garden ecosystem and their importance in the life cycle of a plant. The program is free and registration is not required.

Insect Hunt: 12:30 p.m. 1:30 p.m. on Sunday, August 14. With the help of a Park naturalist, search for insects in the sensory garden or lie by the stream looking for insects. Borrow a net and bug box to see these critters up close. Drop in anytime during this hour. Free, no registration required.

Monarchs: 2:30 p.m. – 4 p.m. onSunday, August 14. Enjoy this PowerPoint presentation on the amazing life of monarch butterflies and how you can become involved in the conservation of the Monarch. This program is recommended for individuals ages 10 and older. The program is free and registration is not required.
