Learn To Become a Weather Spotter

A National Weather Service meteorologist will be offering free training for York County residents interested in becoming volunteer weather “spotters.”

Skywarn spotters are the local eyes and ears for the Weather Service. They relay critical weather information to National Weather Service offices to help forecasters make better/more informed forecasts and to help forecasters warn the public of impending dangers or hazards.

A National Weather meteorologist at 10 a.m. on Saturday, May 21 will offer free Skywarn training at the York County Emergency Services Center, 120 Davies Drive in Springettsbury Township.

The public is encouraged to attend. The 90-minute class is sponsored by the York County Office of Emergency Management.

The class will cover topics such as:
• The basics of thunderstorm development
• Identifying severe weather features
• How to report severe weather and what should be reported
• Basic severe weather safety

Current Skywarn spotters are encouraged to bring their Spotter ID cards or ID numbers.
