Take The Family To Ocean Days, March 22 & 23

The York County Department of Parks and Recreation in March will host a weekend-long program focusing on ocean life.

The family-friendly “Ocean Days” program is scheduled from 9:30 a.m. until 4 p.m. on Saturday. March 22 and from 12:30 until 4 p.m. on Sunday, March 23 at the Nixon County Park Nature Center.

Marine Science Educators from the Chincoteague Bay Field Station, Virginia will be present to introduce visitors to a variety of ocean life. Crafts, activity tables, viewing and touch tanks will be featured. There is a $2 admission for those over the age of 5.

Park members and children ages 5 and under are admitted free. Admission is good for re-entry all weekend. Below are the special programs taking place throughout the weekend. All programs are included in the admission fee.

Available Throughout the Weekend

Tides Story Walk – Available all weekend outside as you walk a trail and read a story about the shore.

Fish Printing – Available all weekend except the last hour of each day. Included in admission fee. All supplies provided. If you want to do additional prints bring a white tee-shirt or cloth bag along.

Saturday, March 22

9:30 a.m. - A Sea Turtle’s Life – Parks intern and National Aquarium Educator Lauren Albright will lead this 20 minute program about the oceans turtles.

10:30 a.m. - Under the Sea – Learn about the life in the ocean and see close up views of marine animals. This program repeats at 3 p.m. on March 23.

11 a.m. - Plankton Races – Learn about plankton and then build plankton to race. For children ages 8 and up. Class size is limited. Register at 428-1961. Repeated at 1:45 p.m. on March 23.

12:30 p.m. - In the Waves – This 60-minute program will be led by a staff member of the Chincoteague Bay Field Station. Understand what happens along the beaches and in back-bay marshes.

2:00 p.m. - Living Like a Jelly – Park Intern and National Aquarium Educator Lauren Albright will use props, costumes and audience participation to teach participants what it’s like to be a jellyfish.

2:30 p.m. - Creature Feature – Come face-to-face with some of the most common fish and invertebrates along the Virginia coast. Repeated at 12:30 p.m. March 23.

Sunday, March 23

12:30 p.m. - Creature Feature – Come face-to-face with some of the most common fish and invertebrates along the Virginia coast. 

1:45 p.m. - Plankton Races – Learn about plankton and then build plankton to race. For children ages 8 and up. Class size is limited. Register at 428-1961. 

2 p.m. - Sharks of the Atlantic – Lauren Albright will present a family-focused presentation on the real story about the Atlantic sharks.

3 p.m. - Under the Sea – Learn about the life in the ocean and see close up views of marine animals.
