Judge Sheryl Ann Dorney Retires

The York County Court of Common Pleas today announced the retirement of longtime Common Pleas Judge Sheryl Ann Dorney.

Dorney is a former prosecutor (1975-1984) and private-practice attorney who was elected judge in 1987.
The Quakertown native retired effective Thursday, Aug. 1. She is the first female judge to serve on the York County Court of Common Pleas.

Dorney said she plans to travel and spend time with family.

“On behalf of all the judges, I wish Judge Dorney well in her future endeavors,” said President Judge Stephen P. Linebaugh.

Dorney graduated with a bachelor’s degree in history from Mansfield University in 1971. She earned her Juris Doctor from the Valparaiso School of Law in 1974.

Her position on the bench will be up for election in 2015, although the governor could make an appointment in the interim. Her duties are being distributed among other judges, including senior judges, until a replacement takes the seat.

Any gubernatorial appointment is subject to Pennsylvania Senate approval.
