"Rocks & More Rocks" Geology Hikes This Summer

The York County Department of Parks and Recreation twice this summer will present a geology walk called “Rocks and More Rocks” at Rocky Ridge County Park.

York County Parks Program Coordinator Jeri Jones and Lancaster County Parks Naturalist Mary Ann Schlegel will team-up to take hikers back into time to when the area was covered by an ocean, later became a tropical swamp and finally was affected by the Ice Age. Learn what rocks are found in the park that relate to its geologic history. Participants should wear comfortable hiking shoes for this 2-hour program.

The first hike begins at 10 a.m. on Friday, June 28, and the second program is scheduled to start at 6 p.m. on Tuesday, July 23. Both hikes begin at the Hidden Laurel Parking Area.

There is no fee for the program and registration is not required. For more information, please contact the Nature Center at Nixon Park at (717) 428-1961.
